ABOUT ICAR- Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur 208024

Indian Institute of Pulses Research (IIPR) was established as national Institute by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) as a premier Institute for basic, strategic and applied research on major pulse crops. The Institute is involved in generation of basic information, development of high yielding varieties, efficient cropping system and appropriate production and protection technologies, post-harvest management, production of breeder seeds, demonstration and transfer of technologies, and strategic coordination of pulses research through wide network of testing centers across the country.

Genesis:

The genesis of concerted research work on pulse crops goes back to 1966, when All India Coordinated Pulses Improvement Project (AICPIP) was started at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi. Later in 1978, its headquarters was shifted to the Regional Station of IARI at Kanpur under the name of Project Directorate (Pulses). It was further elevated as Directorate of Pulses Research (DPR) in 1984 and became an independent entity under the direct control of ICAR. In 1993 the DPR was upgraded and elevated to the status of Indian Institute of Pulses Research, and simultaneously, AICPIP was trifurcated into three coordinated projects on chickpea, pigeonpea and MULLaRP (mungbean, urdbean, lentil, lathyrus, rajmash and pea) to provide focused attention on each crop. In 2015 the institutes mandate was expanded to include arid legumes with shifting of All India Network Project on Arid Legumes.

For strengthening the region specific research, the Institute has one Regional Station cum Off-season Nursery at Dharwad in Karnataka, which started functioning since April, 2012 and one Regional Station at Bhopal, which started functioning since April, 2013
